Vintage Hairstyles of the Rich and Famous
From Amy Winehouse’s humongous beehive, to Marilyn Monroe’s gorgeous golden locks, we just can’t get enough of celebrities and their vintage hairstyles.
How do they pull them off without looking as though they have been dragged through a hedge backwards? How did they come up with these original ideas? Just how many hours did their stylists spend making them look a million dollars? Vintage hairstyles are fascinating.
For years we have been utterly transfixed by the glamorous vintage hairstyles of our classy role models such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. Those fantastic blonde curly locks that Marilyn modeled inspired us all in the 50s. While brave Audrey pushed all the boundaries with her short and jagged tresses. Then came the big bouffant styles of the 60s, followed by the thick and full styles of the 70s and 80s. So what do we notice about hair fashion? It all goes around in circles! Amy Winehouse rocks the classic beehive that is inspiring teens all over the world, and with stars such as Victoria Beckham and Rihanna chopping their long locks into short snappy styles; an old trend is reformed and reshaped.
Some would say that our GHD straighteners, blow dryers and expensive salon products are our hair saviors, without which we could not create those wonderful dos. But how did they manage to concoct high maintenance hairstyles in the 50s and 60s? Uncomfortable nights sleeping whilst wearing hair rollers and pins were used to create those tight curls and it was popular to have thick “bangs” cut to create a more edgy style. From there the groovy swingin’ 60s took over with huge fashion inspiring stars such as Twiggy parading her ultra short crop and the mop haired Beatles. With the 60s influence also came funky accessories such as multicolored headscarves, Alice bands and brightly colored flower power clips.
After the swingin’ 60s came the punkish short spikey hairstyles of the 70s that were all the rage, this era also came with some very bizarre fashion trends! Remember the very slick inspirations from the glorious movie musical “Grease” featuring style legends of the time, John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. In this era, the only hair tool you needed was a big fat tub of hair gel.
The 80s continued the punkish theme, but brought along it is own styles of thick and feathered looks. Some of the style legends of this time include Michael Jackson, who modeled the trendy “Jheri curl” and Cindy Lauper who told us “Girls just wanna have fun”, especially when dying their hair all sorts of vibrant colors as she did.
From here, hair fashion has developed into a more sophisticated, straight and sleek trend but with curly hair also still firmly holding its place as a timeless hair trend. The availability of hair straighteners, blow dryers, curling tongs, rollers, clips, accessories and highly trained hairdressers has allowed us all to develop our own hairstyles but celebrities such as Amy Winehouse and Dita Von Teese strive to model the vintage hairstyles but with their own modern twists.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia and oral care: a successful quality improvement project.
Am J Infect Control. 2009 Sep; 37(7): 590-7
Hutchins K, Karras G, Erwin J, Sullivan KL
BACKGROUND: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a nosocomial pneumonia that develops in patients on mechanical ventilation for >or=48 hours. VAP develops at an estimated rate of 1% to 3% per day of mechanical ventilation. METHODS: Quality improvement project. Mechanically ventilated patients received the following oral care every 4 hours: the teeth were brushed with cetylpyridinium chloride (changed to 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate in 2007) using a suction toothbrush, the oral cavity was cleansed with suction swabs treated with hydrogen peroxide, a mouth moisturizer was applied, deep oropharyngeal suctioning was performed, and suction catheters were used to control secretions. The primary efficacy variable was a diagnosis of VAP in patients mechanically ventilated for >or=48 hours. RESULTS: The historical average rate of VAP in 2004 was 12.6 cases/1000 ventilator-days. After the inception of the quality improvement project, VAP rates decreased to 4.12 (VAP cases/days of ventilation x 1000) for May to December 2005, to 3.57 for 2006, and to 1.3 for 2007. CONCLUSION: The use of an oral care protocol intervention and ventilator bundle led to an 89.7% reduction in the VAP rate in mechanically ventilated patients from 2004 to 2007.
